 How You Can Help
S A V E – Australia Inc (Specialist Assignment Volunteers Enterprise) is a not-for-profit organization responsible for the management and supervision of the continuing work of Ausnews Global Network (AGN), Aborigines for Refugees, United Against Racism, Coalition for Justice for Refugees and the Australian Human Rights Newsletter.

The principal aim of S A V E – Australia is to promote awareness of social justice and human rights issues, and to provide Australians with an opportunity to engage as volunteers in the work of social justice and human rights, locally and globally.

The work of S A V E – Australia includes:
  • Inform and educate people about the aspirations for justice for all;
  • Develop coordination between like-minded groups, communities and individuals;
  • Design and distribute human rights education materials;
  • Promote reform to eliminate all forms of human rights violations through education and information dissemination at all levels; and work for the elimination of poverty and suffering.

For the period of 2003 - 04, S A V E – Australia Inc has achieved specific successes in highlighting the plight of refugees in Australia and raising awareness of human rights issues more generally:

  • In October and November 2003 we held screenings of the film “Molly and Mobarak” in NSW Parliament House in Sydney and Federal Parliament House in Canberra. The film deals with the reality of suffering experienced by Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) holders. The screenings highlighted the political responsibility for this highly abusive policy.
  • We held a fundraiser and celebrated International Migrants’ Day in December, 2003.
  • Last year in March at the NSW Parliament House in Sydney and again in June at the Federal Parliament House in Canberra we organized National Conferences on Human Rights and Mental Health.
  • We have organized a number of community education events on the ongoing issues, causes and concerns throughout NSW and ACT.
  • Produced the online human rights newsletter which is linked to over half a million readers around the world.

These achievements have been the result of the voluntary creativity and goodwill of many people from diverse sectors of Australia. Like many similar groups, we receive no government funding or regular sponsorship and rely entirely on donations to support our activities. Unlike many other groups, however, S A V E - Australia is the only group in Australia which provides support to refugees that is actually run by a refugee.

In 2005 - 2006 work in progress to produce a series of documentary films focusing on the mental health and human rights issues of the Indigenous Australians, Refugees and Asylum Seekers, and the Adolescent Australians.

We are now preparing for the “3rd National Conference on Mental Health and Human Rights”, at the Federal Parliament House in Canberra on 8 - 9 September 2005. Conference Organising Committee invites 'Expression of Interest' from different groups, communities and organisations for sponsorship to the conference or any other kind of help people may wish to offer.

We are also looking for some enthusiasic individuals to volunteer their time with different skills to help out in organising the conference and to work on the day as conference aid.
